Brakes are the number one reason commercial vehicles get placed out of service at DOT inspections. Most of those violations are avoidable, because they come from wear and adjustment issues that a routine check would have caught.
What inspectors actually flag
The common findings are out of adjustment air brakes, worn linings below the limit, air leaks, and defective chambers or hoses. Any one of these can pull a unit out of service on the spot, which means a driver stranded and a load stuck until it is fixed.
Why it sneaks up on fleets
Brakes degrade slowly, so a truck that stopped fine yesterday can be out of spec today. Air systems in particular need timing and leak checks that a driver cannot do from the cab. Without a scheduled full system inspection, the first sign of trouble is often the inspector's chalk.
The fix is a routine, not a scramble
A regular air and disc brake service that checks adjustment, linings, chambers, valves, and lines keeps units in service and legal. When something is worn, catching it in the bay is a fraction of the cost of a roadside out-of-service order and the delay it causes.
