A derate is the engine computer cutting power on purpose to protect the engine or force aftertreatment service. It is a warning, not a random failure, and how you respond in the first few minutes matters.
What a derate is telling you
Most derates trace back to the turbo, the DPF, or the DEF system. A plugged particulate filter, a DEF quality or dosing fault, or a boost problem all trigger the ECU to limit power. The dash usually shows a warning and a countdown to a lower speed limit.
First steps for the driver
Do not ignore it and do not keep pushing the unit hard. Note the warning, get to a safe location, and report the fault code if the unit has telematics. A remote read of the code lets the shop plan the parts and repair before the truck even arrives, which shortens the fix.
Why the root cause matters
Clearing a code without fixing the cause just brings the derate back, often worse. A proper diagnosis separates a filter that needs cleaning from a sensor that needs replacing from a turbo that is failing, so the repair actually holds.
